Once Upon A Time There Was 

The Five Cent Silver Piece... 

Before The Five Cent Nickel.

Labeled The Half Dime 1792. 

 It First Surfaced As The Half Disme

With The Patterns and Tests. 

There Are Copper And Silver Samples.

Made For Circulation

The Half Dime Continued To The Civil War Break Out.

Silver An Intrinsic Metal Was Hoarded.

A New Size Was Made Into Patterns And Essays ( Model Type Strikes)

In 1865 Congress Approved The Change

Which Was Introduced In 1866

 As The Shield Nickel Five Cent Piece

The Half Dime And The Nickel 

Which Continued With Both, 

Production Was Larger With The Cheaper Nickel Piece.

Silver Through 1873.

The Half Dime Was Discontinued. 

The Nickel Continues Today
